The Food City project began with the rediscovery of a mid-century shopping center on Old Sonoma Road, once a cornerstone of South Napa’s daily life. Originally built in the 1940s, the site held strong architectural character and a deep connection to the surrounding neighborhood. The Chaka team was brought on to reimagine the property as a destination that honors its history while supporting Napa’s evolving local culture.
Through research, planning, and creative direction, the concept was reframed as a community-driven marketplace featuring cafes, restaurants, and local retailers. The centerpiece, the 1942 Club, will introduce a modern hospitality experience on the second level of the main building. The reimagined 30,000-square-foot site is positioned to become a true third space for locals — a place to gather, eat, and connect — while strengthening the cultural fabric of South Napa.
