Celebrating a local hero through one of the largest public murals in Corona del Mar.
As part of an ongoing community art initiative in partnership with Sherman Library & Gardens and the City of Newport Beach, we helped bring a new landmark mural to the heart of Corona del Mar. The 100-foot artwork, titled Duke, honors Duke Kahanamoku, the father of modern surfing, whose influence on surfing, ocean rescue, Olympic history, and Hawaiian culture continues to be felt nearly a century later.
Located along Pacific Coast Highway on the side of Crown Ace Hardware, the mural was developed through a collaborative effort between community leaders, artists, and local organizations. Inspired by Duke's remarkable legacy, the artwork was designed to celebrate his impact on coastal culture while creating a meaningful visual landmark for residents and visitors alike.
The result is a highly visible public artwork that enriches the Corona del Mar corridor while honoring an individual whose legacy extends far beyond the waves. As part of a growing collection of community murals, Duke demonstrates how public art can strengthen identity, spark conversation, and create lasting connections between people and place.
